There's only subjective, objective is an illusion. The only experience I can describe is mine. The city is not sustainable. The countryside can be, with more ease. The way of life introduced in the world by western civilization is definitely not sustainable and it seems to be on the brink of failure. So what to do? For many years I have been thinking that the only way is to create alternative micro-societies and I decided to live on the border between civilization and nature, paying hommage to those cultures that interacted with nature, being a part of it. We are doomed to extinction, astrophysics predicts it. We are only accelerating the process a bit. But in the meantime we can live our short lives contributing to make the lot of succeeding generations less hard.
I don't appreciate much the word tourism. It rings superficial.
I believe that travelling is a way to interface with nature and with different cultural approaches to living with the planet. We can participate in hope and dismay, we can learn and we can teach. Nature can overwhelm us with awe. We can show locals things they got blind to by overexposure in their own backyards and they can show us things we never even imagined existed.

I can appreciate what your thoughts are.
I to strongly believe that the "growth economy" is not sustainable. In its very existence it contradicts itself. This is not the era of manifest destiny and the only truly viable economy is one of sustainability.
After this recent chain of events we can all see what excess and greed gets us.
There are 2 main paths we need to take now.
First, the economy must swing to the green economy. This would benefit the planet, its living creatures and resource depletion rate. This would include conservation as well as new products for renewable energy or alternative energy.
Second, the current currency systems, FIAT money is a very real problem. I completely understand the need to transact in some form of currency, but to do so on paper bills and coin with nothing backing them creates a real time problem.

Just some thoughts of my own.

Colonies developed in 1901 have a specific executive law for each home to maintain 1/3 for the greenery around the covered area. Now i feel 50 Percent will be necessary and more is appreciable.Therefore i designed a full city inside the beautifull orchardry with over 1000 IT and Food Processing related Companies and home in over 100000 sq Miles ..www.geocities.com/theempiregreets. The summer Temps go upto 117 Fn.
But i feel that Macro Project it still is because we cannot take funds and build a micro society and add the the babel. Macro creates million of Jobs and Billions of Dollars and Trillions of Working hours...
